Albany County Jail Roster

The Albany County jail roster is a public resource that lists individuals currently held at the Albany County Correctional Facility in New York. AlbanyNYCourt.us can help you find publicly available information about current and recent inmates. You can also access jail roster information through the Albany County Sheriff's Office website, by calling the correctional facility directly, or by visiting in person. A jail roster search lets the public confirm whether someone is in custody, view current charges, and check booking details. The Albany County Sheriff's Office maintains the roster, which is updated regularly to reflect new bookings and releases. The roster functions as a transparency tool, giving community members access to basic custody information without requiring a formal records request.

Search Current Inmates in Albany Jail

There are several ways to look up someone currently held at the Albany County Correctional Facility.

Online Search

  1. Visit AlbanyNYCourt.us to search for publicly available court and inmate information related to Albany County.
  2. You can also use the New York State DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup tool if the individual has been transferred to state custody. This tool allows searches by name, NYSID number, or Department Identification Number (DIN).
  3. To search the county-level roster, you will typically need the individual's full legal name. A booking number, if known, can help narrow results.

If you cannot locate someone online, the person may have already been released, transferred, or booked under a different name variation.

By Phone

Call the Albany County Correctional Facility to ask whether a specific individual is currently in custody. Staff can confirm custody status over the phone but generally will not release detailed booking or charge information by telephone.

In Person

You may visit the facility's lobby during regular business hours to request inmate information.

Juvenile offenders are excluded from the public roster. Records related to sealed or youthful offender cases are also not available through public searches, consistent with New York's Personal Privacy Protection Law.

Find Albany Jail Booking Records Online

A booking record is created each time an individual is processed into the Albany County Correctional Facility. During intake, staff record identifying information and assign a unique booking number. A typical booking record includes:

  • Full legal name and aliases
  • Date and time of booking
  • Booking number
  • Charges at the time of arrest
  • Arresting agency (Albany Police Department, Albany County Sheriff's Office, New York State Police, etc.)
  • Bail or bond amount, if set
  • Mugshot (where published)

Current booking records are generally accessible through the jail roster maintained by the Albany County Sheriff's Office. If you need records that are no longer displayed on the active roster — for example, for someone who has been released — you may need to submit a formal records request.

Under New York's Freedom of Information Law (FOIL), the public can request government records from state and local agencies. For records held by the City of Albany (such as police reports), you can submit a request through the City of Albany Records Access / FOIL page. For records held by the Albany County Sheriff's Office, contact the Sheriff's Office directly to ask about their FOIL submission process.

Search the Albany Jail Roster by Last Name or Booking Number

The Albany County jail roster supports two main search approaches:

Search by Name

  • Enter the individual's last name. Adding a first name can help narrow results if the last name is common.
  • Use the person's full legal name rather than a nickname or abbreviation.
  • If you are unsure of the exact spelling, try common variations. Some roster systems allow partial name searches; others require an exact match.
  • On roster pages that display a full list rather than a search field, use your browser's built-in find function (Ctrl+F on Windows or Cmd+F on Mac) to locate a name quickly.

Search by Booking Number

  • If you already have a booking number — from a court document, bail receipt, or attorney — enter it directly for the fastest result.
  • Booking number searches return a single record, eliminating the need to sort through multiple results.

If Your Search Returns No Results

A blank result does not necessarily mean the person was never booked. Consider these possibilities:

  • The individual may have been released or transferred to another facility.
  • There may be a delay between the physical booking and the record appearing online.
  • The name may be spelled differently in the system (hyphenated names, suffixes, middle names).
  • The person may have been transferred to state prison — try the DOCCS Incarcerated Lookup instead.

If you still cannot find the person, call the correctional facility at (518) 869-2561 and ask staff to confirm custody status.

Jail Roster Updates and Search Limitations in Albany

The Albany County jail roster is updated on a regular basis to reflect new bookings and releases, but it is not an instantaneous record. There are practical limitations to keep in mind:

FactorWhat to Expect
Update frequencyThe roster is generally updated multiple times per day, but there can be a lag of several hours between a booking or release and the roster reflecting the change.
New bookingsAn individual booked late at night or on a weekend may not appear on the roster until the following business day.
Released inmatesOnce someone is released, their record is typically removed from the active roster within a short period. The roster is not an archive.
Data entry delaysHigh-volume booking periods (weekends, holidays) can slow data entry, causing temporary gaps.
Transferred inmatesIndividuals transferred to state custody (DOCCS) will no longer appear on the county roster.

The roster reflects current custody status only. It is not a comprehensive historical record of all individuals ever booked into the facility. For older booking records or records of individuals no longer in custody, submit a FOIL request to the Albany County Sheriff's Office or check the Open FOIL NY portal for guidance on requesting public records from New York government agencies.

Keep in mind that certain records — including those involving sealed cases, youthful offenders, and pending investigations — may be restricted from public disclosure under New York law. The New York State Police wanted and missing persons page is a separate resource for locating individuals with active warrants statewide.
